Toba Aquarium (鳥羽水族館 Toba-suizokukan?) is a public aquarium, which is located in Toba, Mie, Japan. It has 12 zones which reproduces natural environments.850 species, 20,000 animals are bred and exhibited.

Watching course is not fixed, so you can watch animals freely. The total length of the aisle is about 1.5 kilometers.

History

It was opened May 1955, and it is 26th oldest public aquarium.

Former buildings were in the west of now buildings but they were small space. So, they got the site of SINFONIA TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. Toba factory and moved there.

A lot of families visit after it opens, and it is visited 50 million totaling people.It hosts the most visitors in Japan.

It tries scholarly investigations as an adult education institution because Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology officially specifies Toba Aquarium as a museum. It also emphasizes protection and breeding of rare marine creatures which is in danger of extinction. For example, a birth of Finless Porpoise, a birth of the second generation Sea otter for the first time in Japan, and the record of Dugongs breeding is notable. It was founded by Haruaki Nakamura(中村幸昭), now he is the honorary president.
